Overview
Production scale with a Trial across ~140 households in Australia
Managing energy at home is fragmented. Users juggle multiple apps, miss their provider's saving events, and end up paying more for less efficient usage. Alice solves this by connecting smart devices and saving events into a single system where consumer interactions, business logic, and operational decisions all work together. Users get effortless optimization. Providers get control over how those experiences are configured and delivered.

Users get effortless optimization. Providers get control over how those experiences are configured and delivered.
I worked on Alice for nearly three years, designing end to end experiences across the product and evolving its structure as it scaled. Rather than focusing on isolated features, my role was to ensure the product remained clear and consistent as complexity increased.
The challenge was not solving a single problem, but managing continuous growth. New devices, automations, and energy events introduced increasing complexity, while the product had to serve both consumers and operators with very different needs.
I worked on Alice for nearly three years, designing end to end experiences across the product and evolving its structure as it scaled. Rather than focusing on isolated features, my role was to ensure the product remained clear and consistent as complexity increased.

From Foundations to Scale
Early on, the focus was on defining core flows and interaction patterns, bringing clarity to a technical domain. As the product expanded, inconsistencies and edge cases started to emerge, requiring a shift toward system thinking, reducing duplication and aligning patterns across the experience.
Over time, the product evolved into a platform where operators could configure and control user experiences. Designing in this context meant working across layers, ensuring that backend decisions translated into clear and usable interactions, while balancing simplicity for users and control for operators.

Structure and system
To manage complexity without losing momentum, I structured the design work across five files with distinct purposes. The Sandbox was a space for open exploration, where ideas could be tested without pressure. The Review file brought work into a shareable format for discussions with stakeholders and the team. The Hand-off file documented every user story with the detail developers needed to build from.
The Master file served as the single source of truth, capturing all screens and states across the product. Supporting all of this was the Design System, which evolved under real product pressure — defining reusable components and standardised patterns to maintain consistency and support faster development.

This work improved consistency across the product and made it easier to scale new features without redesigning from scratch.
The product reached real households by running a live trial with one of the biggest Australian energy providers across ~140 households. The client eventually moved on, but the product kept finding space to live, which says something about what gets built when clarity and consistency are treated as foundations, not afterthoughts.
